Maruti Suzuki has achieved a milestone by dispatching over 10 lakh vehicles through its in-plant railway sidings located in Hansalpur, Gujarat, and Manesar, Haryana. The Gujarat facility has handled approximately 7.9 lakh vehicles, while the Manesar siding has managed around 2.1 lakh units.
This significant figure was reached within three years and five months of the Hansalpur siding’s inauguration in March 2023 and the Manesar facility’s commencement in June 2025. Rail transportation now plays a much larger role in Maruti Suzuki’s logistics compared to a decade ago.
In FY 2014-15, rail accounted for only 5 percent of vehicle movement, but this share rose to 26.5 percent in FY 2025-26. The company aims to further increase this to 35 percent by FY 2030-31 through continued investment in dedicated railway infrastructure.
Currently, the Gujarat and Manesar sidings manage 70 percent of Maruti Suzuki’s rail-based dispatches in the ongoing fiscal year. From the start of FY 2026-27 to August 31, rail movement exceeded 3 lakh vehicles, highlighting the rapid integration of these terminals into the company’s logistics strategy.
Since FY 2014-15, Maruti Suzuki has transported over 33 lakh vehicles by rail. Of these, 10 lakh vehicles were directly dispatched from the Hansalpur and Manesar plants using their in-plant sidings. These sidings enable finished vehicles to be loaded directly onto trains, bypassing the need for truck transportation to external terminals.
According to Maruti Suzuki, this system reduces fuel consumption, greenhouse gas emissions, and truck traffic on public roads. Both facilities were developed as part of the PM GatiShakti National Master Plan. The next phase of expansion will involve a new dedicated siding at the Kharkhoda facility.
Maruti Suzuki remains the sole passenger vehicle manufacturer in India with dedicated in-plant railway sidings at both Hansalpur and Manesar. The company’s commitment to rail infrastructure is set to continue, with plans for a new siding at Kharkhoda, further boosting the share of rail-based vehicle dispatches.
This expansion aligns with Maruti Suzuki’s goals to minimize environmental impact and enhance logistics efficiency. The new Kharkhoda siding will play a key role in achieving these objectives, reinforcing the company’s focus on sustainable and streamlined operations.
