A police constable in the UK was able to catch a suspected thief on a bicycle thanks to a good Samaritan in a van. The officer, PC Sperling, was on foot when he spotted the suspect, who took off on a bicycle after allegedly stealing from a nearby shop on Woking Road in Guildford, England.
Bodycam video footage shared by Surrey Police shows the cyclist, dressed in gray, riding away as PC Sperling follows on foot. As the gap between them grows, a van stops to offer Sperling a lift, and the officer climbs into the passenger side.
The van’s driver and Sperling work together to spot where the cyclist has gone and get ahead of him. Once in position, Sperling gets out of the van and tackles the rider to the ground, as captured on his bodycam. Police confirmed the arrest and thanked the van driver for their help.
The use of a van in this police chase was unusual, but effective. The suspect was on a regular bicycle, not a high-speed e-bike, and the van was able to keep up and get ahead of him.

The bodycam footage shows the moments leading up to the arrest, including the officer pointing as the pair continue along the road.
In a rare instance, a van proved to be the perfect vehicle for the job, allowing the officer to catch up to the suspect and make an arrest. PC Sperling and the police force benefited from the driver’s help, which was essential in apprehending the suspect.
They acknowledged that the driver’s actions were essential in helping PC Sperling catch the suspect. The bodycam footage shared by Surrey Police serves as evidence of the incident and the role the van driver played in it.
