At the heart of each Northumbria campus, our libraries provide a range of study space and technology to suit every learning style. Learning and teaching centres around hands-on exploration of craftsmanship, technical skills, materials and processes enabling you to display evidence of your creative thinking. Activities in design studios and specialist workshop environments are integral to this process in all levels of your study, encouraging individual creative freedom in a collaborative design community.
You will learn how to research, develop and design a market-led collection of garments presented as a Fashion design portfolio. You will learn how to produce a personal portfolio in both physical and screen-based formats and present these at critiques, giving opportunity for evaluative feedback and exchange with peers in preparation for Industrial Placement at level 5. In ‘Introduction to Fashion Skills’ you will learn a range of skills that will underpin the programme’s craftsmanship ethos, and support your practical making of garments and samples on the Fashion programme, initiating the building of long-term practical skills.
Our small class sizes enable you to benefit from their real-world experience and industry access. Research the styles and periods of Fashion News clothing needed for film or theatrical productions. Collaborate with other designers to coordinate special products and designs.
- The two museums also exhibit looks from the university’s permanent collection of more than 1,000 garments created by the world’s leading fashion houses.
- Students have interned at Calvin Klein, Donna Karan, Ralph Lauren, Tommy Hilfiger, Josie Natori, J. Mendel, Michael Kors, and Victoria’s Secret.
- The Brunswick campus is home to a number of specialist facilities, including the Fashion Hub, designed to allow students to experiment and learn industry best practice in a purpose-built environment.
A great example of this is artist Whitney McVeigh’s project ‘1000 Coats’, which will see 100 women from different backgrounds each sewing 10 coats. As part of the project there are workshops teaching women to sew, providing them with new skills whilst also encouraging them to work together as part of a community and form new partnerships. Despite its faults, one of the things fashion can do is spread an idea around very powerfully, coherently, and with the all-important ‘cool’ factor.
